about

St Louis native Ron S. is a consummate example of the DIY ethos that drove the 90s Midwest techno community to make music and put out their own records, and that ethos still drives him today. Ron’s earliest records on his Anode label were fixtures in many a DJ’s set back in the day and 2017 finds him back in the vinyl game and in top form with the Space Dust EP.

From his live sets with a table full of drum machines and synthesizers to his Embrace the Machine club night featuring only live acts, Ron’s dedication to live techno performance is core to his philosophy. Much like his live sets, his releases keep things stripped down, raw, and always tinged with the kind of bump and groove that keeps a dancefloor moving.

The darkly hypnotic Alnilam sets the pace with echoed stabs that threaten to let loose but always ride the line of restraint. Asymptote keeps it simple with dub echoed synths that open into an infectious melody and beat that keeps things moving forward. Enter a rolling machine clank beat with Mintaka, its staccato synth building relentlessly until the claps come in and it’s all over but the jack. And finally, Space Dust’s plucky rhythm set against a woozy wobble meets a wandering pad to end things with a celestial quirk.

Ron S. is a true techno veteran and this record shows just how much his longtime love of the machines has translated into the expertise of knowing just how to find that relentless techno groove.
